Three Tesla Motors Execs Killed in Crash; Musk Not Onboard

Three executives at the privately-held electric car company Tesla Motors have died in a plane crash Wednesday afternoon, but the company's founder was not on board.

According to the car blog Jalopnik and the San Francisco Chronicle, a twin-engine Cessna crashed a residential neighborhood in Palo Alto, Calif.

The plane was owned by Doug Broun, a senior electrical engineer with Tesla, according to the Chronicle. But it was unclear if Broun was onboard or who the other two passengers were.

FOX Business confirmed that Elon Musk, the company's founder, was not on board. The founder said it was "the worst day in Tesla's history," in an e-mailed comment to FOX Business' Liz Claman.

Tesla is the manufacturer of electric sports cars that have gotten heavy media attention. The company filed an S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission in late January, a formal announcement of a company's intent to go public.
